Mike
Mike's ideal home
We are looking for a forever home for Mike where his new owners can be around for the majority of the day as he does not like being left alone. Mike can also be anxious in indoor environments to begin with, so needs a quiet home with people who are willing to help gently integrate him into a home environment, having easy access to the garden and enrichment toys. He does have doggie pals here at centre that he walks with and he is comfortable walking past and being around other on-lead dogs but he prefers not to meet them if he doesn't know them or have off-lead dogs run up to him. We are looking to rehome Mike as an only dog. Mike is looking for an adult only home but could potentially cope with children visiting occasionally. He is working with our Training and Behaviour team to help him learn to settle but this will take time. Because of this we are looking for a committed home within 45 minutes of the centre and they should be prepared for multiple, regular visits to the centre and home. Mike does have some medical issues, he has arthritis in some of his joints, which are managing with pain relief. And a skin allergy that is currently being treated with oral medication.
Could you be Mike's perfect match?
Mike is super trainable, active and playful, and certainly doesn’t act his age! He is an older fellow who enjoys the slower things in life. He likes nothing more than going on calm, relaxing walks, with lots of smells and things to find. Mike has been with us at Dogs Trust for a long time and has settled into life in kennels. This means Mike may have trouble settling in a home to begin with, however, he loves nothing more than a relaxing nap in a cosy spot. Mike will need his new owners to be patient and take things slowly as he adapts to a home environment. Mike does have additional training needs, as some aspects of Mike’s character may be challenging for adopters, we will aid in ensuring his specific rehabilitation will be successful in a home, as settling will not be without obstacles. Mike has made huge leaps and strides in his training, however, as he has been with us for a long time, transitioning to a home will hold challenges. This includes a significant level of supervision from adopters in the home and the outdoor environment.
Due to his anxiety and history, Mike cannot be left alone in a home, this includes quick trips to the shops or leaving him alone in the home whilst doing gardening. Adopters will receive support from our Dogs Trust Behaviour and Training Team we will aid and advise with gradual exposure to short absences, with the hope adopters will be able to leave build up the amount of time Mike is comfortable being on his own. Ideally, Mike would live with 2 or more adopters in the home, so this commitment can be shared.
